Things to Do in Abakaliki: A Visitor’s Guide
By Galaxy La-Palm · 27 July 2026

Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, has grown into a lively city with a strong sense of its own identity. If you are visiting for the first time, here is how to spend your time and get a feel for the place.
Places to see
The city has invested in green spaces and squares that are pleasant for an evening stroll. Ebonyi is famous for its rice, so the mills and farms around the city are a big part of local life and worth seeing. The wider state is known as the salt of the nation, and a day trip to the historic salt lakes near Uburu and Okposi is well worth the drive.
Local flavour
Abakaliki is a good place to enjoy honest Nigerian cooking, from fresh local rice dishes to regional specialities. Ask at your hotel for a recommendation and you will usually be pointed somewhere with big portions and warm service.
Practical tips
Travel between towns in daylight and keep some cash on hand. The dry season is the most comfortable time to explore, and basing yourself somewhere central makes getting around much easier.
